MacBook Battery Replacement Cost at Year 5
Year five is when a MacBook starts billing you for the years it ran quietly. Service Recommended appears, the runtime shrinks, and the MacBook battery replacement cost you never budgeted becomes a verdict on the whole machine. Pay Apple and keep going, or write the Mac off. Better to decide with a number in hand than on the day the charger is all that keeps the laptop alive.
Pay for a year-five battery service only when Apple's fee, divided by the years you will keep the Mac, undercuts a new Mac's yearly cost.
- Service Recommended is optional: the Mac keeps running, so get a quote before you decide.
- Check coverage first: an active AppleCare plan replaces the battery at no extra charge below 80% capacity.
- Model matters: the only current Apple fee we could trace is for one model, so quote your own.
Why Does MacBook Battery Replacement Cost Arrive at Year 5?
Apple designs a MacBook battery to retain up to 80% of its capacity at 1,000 complete charge cycles, and a laptop charged about 200 times a year reaches that mark in year five.
The 200 is our assumption for a laptop used most working days, not an Apple figure. Call it a rule of thumb, though that flatters it. At 100 cycles a year the mark slips to year ten; at 300 it arrives in a little over three years.
Reaching the mark is not a failure. Apple's Service Recommended page says the battery holds less charge than when new and that you can keep using the Mac. So the bill gets postponed until the runtime annoys you. Our view: irritation is the wrong trigger. Weigh the fee against the Mac's remaining useful life.
Four numbers frame the choice. Apple's batteries page supplies the rating point. AppleInsider reported on 17 December 2025 that Apple's service estimate for a 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro battery is $249, zero under an active AppleCare plan. It is the one current Apple fee we could trace: a reference point, not your price.

The fee varies most between readers: it depends on the model and on whether the battery is bundled into the case. Apple's price tool failed to load when this article was checked, so a quote for your exact Mac beats any number printed here.
A MacBook battery does not die at year five. It crosses Apple's own line there, and the invoice arrives with it.
Phones taught people that a battery swap is cheap, as our iPhone battery replacement cost after warranty piece shows. Laptops differ. In March 2024 an Apple Community reply on a 2017 MacBook Pro said Apple charged US$250 in the US for a complete top-plate assembly. In August 2023 another owner faced "more than $500". Single forum posts, but the gap is the lesson: the quote depends on what gets bundled.
Age sets the outer limit. Apple's vintage and obsolete page (read 31 October 2026) says Mac laptops may qualify for battery-only repairs up to 10 years after they were last sold, parts permitting. That outlasts the window that ends other repairs, covered in our Apple obsolete list guide. Past it, Apple promises nothing.
Is It Worth Replacing a MacBook Battery at Year 5?
Usually yes, if the fee divided by the years you will keep the Mac is well below a replacement Mac's price spread over five years; the calculator below does that division with your own numbers.
Worked example: a five-year-old MacBook Pro sits near 1,000 cycles. Assume Apple quotes $249, AppleCare has lapsed, you plan three more years of use, and a replacement Mac would cost $1,000, judged over five years. Step 1: $249 divided by 3 years is $83 a year. Step 2: $1,000 divided by 5 years is $200 a year. Step 3: the battery is the cheaper year by $117. The $1,000 and three years are placeholders; use your own, and your model's quote for $249.
Find the row that matches your Mac today. Three facts place you: your cycle count, whether AppleCare is active, and how long ago Apple last sold your model.
| If you | Do this | Because |
|---|---|---|
| On AppleCare+ | Book the swap once under 80% | Apple waives the fee |
| Under 1,000 cycles | Keep it; check status monthly | Apple's rating point is still ahead |
| Past 1,000 cycles | Take Apple's quote before any kit | Tools and parts eat the DIY saving |
| Obsolete Mac | Ask for a battery-only repair | Allowed up to 10 years, parts permitting |
| Not sure | Run the calculator above | It sets fee per year against a new Mac |
The third row needs arithmetic. MacRumors reported on 17 December 2025 that Apple's Self Service Repair store sells the 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro battery for $209.25, with a $22.50 credit for the old one, netting $186.75 and leaving $62.25 under Apple's fee. AppleInsider notes tools are not in that price, so DIY wins only if tools and extra parts cost less than that.
DIY beats Apple only if tools and extra parts cost under $62.25 on top of the battery. The bar is derived from the MacRumors and AppleInsider figures above.
What Does Service Recommended Mean on a MacBook?
It means Apple's battery status reports that the battery holds less charge than when new, or is not working normally; the Mac keeps running, and Apple says service is optional if reduced charging does not affect you.
Apple's page names no trigger and does not mention cycle counts, so 1,000 is a design rating, not a switch. Our call: treat the label as the cue to request a quote, not to pay that day. Apple's Mac laptop repair page says the standard warranty does not cover batteries that wear down from normal use, while an AppleCare plan replaces one below 80% capacity at no extra charge.
The clock that matters may be software. On an Intel Mac, the end of Intel Mac security updates can arrive before a new battery pays for itself: hardware time, not security time.
- Ask what is replaced: on older models the battery may come bundled with the top case.
- Independent repair is cheaper but sits outside Apple's warranty and AppleCare, per Apple's support page.
Conditions to check on your own Mac
- The battery status reads Service Recommended, not just a shorter runtime.
- No AppleCare plan is active on this Mac.
- The calculator's cost per year kept is below a new Mac's.
The decision is whether to buy a battery-only service or put that money toward a new Mac. This week, open your battery status, note the cycle count, get Apple's quote for your exact model, and enter both above. If a year of the battery costs less than a year of the new Mac, book the service; if not, stop paying to prolong it.
How we checked this
Read on 31 October 2026: Apple's Service Recommended page and batteries page, plus MacRumors and AppleInsider reports of 17 December 2025. Apple's repair-fee tool would not load, so only the one fee those reports quote is used. The worked example assumes a $249 fee, three more years and a $1,000 Mac. No MacBook was tested hands-on for this article. Last verified: 31 October 2026. Edited by G Ragu, reviewed after publication. Spotted something out of date? Tell us and we will correct it.
