The device is lovely and the account behind it is not yours. That is the thread here. We write about living inside one company’s ecosystem for years at a time, what it gets right, and what it quietly makes difficult when you try to leave.

What you get here

• GRaguInformation has been running since 2008 and is still publishing. There are more than 800 articles here you can search.
• These are ownership notes, written after years rather than a fortnight. When something is praised here, it is because it survived, and when it is criticised, it is because it kept getting in the way. Advertising and sponsored placement pay for the site, and paid links say so. Nobody has bought a kind word about a product that quietly locked its own users in.
• The questions are practical ones about your own things. Where does this photo actually live. Can I take my library with me if I stop paying. What happens to all of it if I switch.
• We criticise design that we mostly like, which annoys both camps. It is the only honest position left after using these things this long.
• Follow along and you keep a clearer picture of where your own data is sitting, which matters most on the day you decide to move it. You leave with your own files, which is not something the account itself guarantees.

How we work

We keep the hardware until it stops. That is where design criticism comes from here, because a thing you have used for six years tells you more than a thing you have held for six days. The data thread works the same way.

A device you love is still a device somebody else can change the rules on.
