Replacing an Old First-Generation Chromecast

Issue with fist generation Chromecast in long term

Updated September 2026: in 2022 I explained why my first-generation Chromecast no longer worked well: it could not install OTT apps and relied entirely on casting, which had become slow. I have rewritten it into a guide to replacing an old casting stick.

I was one of the early Chromecast users and enjoyed casting from my phone and laptop to the TV. Over time the experience soured. The first-generation device could not install streaming apps; everything had to be cast, and that had become slower and less reliable with modern apps and higher-quality video.

Why do old casting sticks struggle?

They were designed for lower-resolution video and older app versions. Google stopped updating the first-generation Chromecast years ago, and newer apps and formats expect more processing power. The result is lag, buffering and casting failures.

Casting only, or a device with apps?

Casting needs a phone for every session and drains its battery during long viewing. A streaming device with its own apps and remote, such as a Google TV device, lets anyone in the family watch without a phone. For most households, having apps on the TV is more convenient.

What are the replacement options?

  • Google TV Streamer or a Chromecast with Google TV: apps plus casting.
  • Android TV sticks and boxes from reputable brands.
  • Apple TV 4K for iPhone households.
  • A new smart TV, if the current TV is also ageing.

What should you check before buying?

Your TV's resolution and HDR support, the apps you use, whether your phones are Android or iPhone, and whether you want a remote with voice search.

How do you set up the new device?

Plug it into an HDMI port and power, connect it to Wi-Fi, and sign in with your Google account on a Google TV device, or your Apple Account on an Apple TV. Install your streaming apps, sign in to each, and set up the remote to control the TV's power and volume. The setup takes about fifteen minutes, and afterwards anyone in the family can watch without needing a phone.

Will your old casting habits still work?

Yes. Google TV devices still accept casting from phones and laptops, so the way you used the old Chromecast carries over, with the apps as an extra. Apple TV uses AirPlay instead, which works from iPhones, iPads and Macs.

What should you do with the old Chromecast?

Reset it to factory settings and recycle it through an e-waste collection point.

Few things I like my IT life and in my company

Few things I like my IT life and in my company
In one of my earlier articles published, I might have detailed the concerns or things that were bothering me in my current company and in this article, I wanted to list down the things that I like in my current IT life and at my company. Following is the couple of things that I like about my company and IT life
  • Work-Life balance on daily lifestyle: For most IT people, the work-life balance depends on the project that they work and the assignments that they get from the Client. Fortunately for me, I was able to get into a project or work, where I could get some time to look after my personal work and spend some time with my family on a regular basis.
  • No weekend support and relaxed work: Other than the routine work-life balance, one another important thing about working in IT is that providing support during weekend and work pressure during certain time. Fortunately for me in the current company, there were NO or minimal support during the weekend and the work was comfortable, where I could finish it off with ease due to longer duration in the company.

Above listed things are based on my personal experience, and it varies from person to person based on their needs or family commitments. For me, work-life balance and relaxed environment is more important than the money or career growth. Read more such articles or insights from my life by checking out the “G R Team Sites”

Is a New Apple Watch Worth Upgrading To?

Is a New Apple Watch Worth Upgrading To?

Updated September 2026: in September 2022 I was disappointed by the Apple Watch Series 8: no redesign despite strong rumours, and few meaningful new features. I have rewritten it into a guide to judging whether a new Apple Watch is worth upgrading to.

I had planned to buy an Apple Watch for a long time and followed the September 2022 event closely. Rumours had promised a major redesign. The Series 8 looked like the Series 7, with modest additions, and I found the launch underwhelming.

What did the Series 8 add?

A temperature sensor used for cycle tracking and retrospective ovulation estimates, Crash Detection, and a low-power mode that extended battery life. Useful for some, but not the change many had waited for.

How do you decide whether to upgrade?

  • List the new features and ask which you would use weekly.
  • Check availability in India; some health features need local approval.
  • Compare battery life with your current watch.
  • Check software support: is your current model still getting watchOS updates?

How often is upgrading worthwhile?

For most people, every three or four years. Year-on-year changes are small; over several generations they add up to a noticeably better display, battery and set of sensors.

Which older models are still good buys?

Models that still receive current watchOS updates and have good battery health. A discounted previous Series model or a current SE covers most people's needs. Check that a used watch has been removed from the previous owner's account, as Activation Lock otherwise makes it unusable.

Are rumours a good guide to buying?

No. Redesign rumours for the Apple Watch circulated for years before the thinner Series 10 arrived in 2024. Buy based on what is actually announced, not what is expected.

What matters more than new sensors?

Comfort, battery life and how well the watch fits your routine. A watch you wear every day, including at night, gives more useful information than one with extra sensors that sits on a charger.

Is a first Apple Watch worth buying in a "lukewarm" year?

Yes, if you do not own one. A minor update for existing owners is still a complete product for a first-time buyer, and last year's model is often discounted at the same time.

Work-Life Balance or Higher Pay: Weighing a Job Switch

Work-Life Balance or Higher Pay: Weighing a Job Switch

Updated September 2026: in 2022, with attrition high and switchers getting big packages, I explained why I preferred work-life balance and peace of mind over a higher salary, including the advantage of internal connections built over years. I have rewritten it into a way to weigh balance against pay when considering a job change.

In 2022 attrition in Indian IT was high and people were changing jobs for large increases. My own preference was work-life balance and peace of mind. Staying long in one company had real advantages: I knew who to call, got things done quickly and had built connections that made the work easier.

What does long tenure give you?

  • Internal network: you know who can unblock problems.
  • Reputation: people trust your judgement, which gives you latitude.
  • Efficiency: familiarity with tools and processes saves hours each week.
  • Stability: benefits, leave balances and seniority built up over time.

What does switching give you?

Usually a larger salary increase than an internal hike, a new title, fresh work and a chance to leave behind problems like a difficult manager. It also resets your network and reputation, which takes time to rebuild.

How do you put a value on balance?

Compare the extra salary with what you would give up: commute time, working hours, travel and stress. An offer that pays 30 percent more but adds two hours of commuting and regular late calls may be worth less than it looks. Ask the new employer directly about working hours, office days and on-call expectations.

Is staying ever the risky choice?

Yes, if your pay falls well behind the market or your skills stop growing. Balance is valuable, but it should not mean stagnation. Keep learning and check your market value every year or two, even if you plan to stay.

How should you decide?

Write down what matters most to you right now, whether money, time, growth or stability, and judge each option against that list. There is no universal right answer, only what fits your stage of life.

How To Prepare Your Home For Winter

It’s important to winterize your home every year to help protect your home and property.

Temperature Control

Get your heating system checked by a professional before the season begins to avoid needing any major repairs when the temperatures fall. Keep your home at a comfortable temperature by setting your thermostat to automatically turn on when the temperature drops below 65 degrees Fahrenheit.  Carefully check around every window and doorframe for any cracks or openings. Seal any leaks with caulk or install weather stripping to prevent cold air from seeping in. Keep a few faucets running when temperatures drop below freezing to protect your pipes from freezing and bursting.

Dealing With Ice

Along with the freezing rain and snow comes the hazard of slippery black ice. Always wear snow boots when you go outside to avoid slipping on any icy spots. Keep your driveway and sidewalks clear during a winter storm. Frequently shovel snow and use cement-safe deicing salt to prevent ice from forming on your pathways. Keep a durable mat by your front door and entryways for added traction. Ice, wind, and snow can also damage plants and weaken trees. Prevent damage from fallen branches by removing dead plants and keeping others well-trimmed.

Prevent Water Damage

For additional protection from the rain and snow, keep your gutters clean and free from any blockages. If your land isn’t graded properly, you might need help moving water away from your home. Downspouts are extensions that can be added to most gutter systems to help prevent water from pooling up and ruining the foundation. If water does not properly drain away from your home, you may end up with water in your basement. Consider installing a sump pump if your home is prone to frequent flooding.

With these things in mind, you can better prepare your home for the freezing temperatures that come along with the winter season.

Tips for Improving Your Garage

Your garage is a great space to refurbish into the exact room you need. Improve your garage with these simple tips.

Spruce Up Appearances

Repaint the walls and concrete floor a vibrant color to make it look brand new. Replace your old garage door Denton with a sturdy new wooden one. An old or damaged garage door can really taint the overall look of your home. Store a broom nearby to regularly sweep any dirt or dust that builds up to help keep the area clean. Install shelving and use pallets to store equipment and keep things off the ground. This will not only help you save space but also prevent water damage in the case of flooding.

Brainstorm Possibilities

Once your garage is organized, clean, and ready for use you can decide what you want to keep inside. You might use it as a traditional workspace with cars and tools, or an area where you keep all kinds of extra storage. If you have children, it’s a great idea to convert a garage into a playroom. This helps give your kids space to play and contains their toys in one area. With proper insulation, you can even fully finish the space and transform it into a spare guest room.

Create Your Home Gym

Alternatively, you can transform your new space into a home gym. Include a basic set of dumbbells, kettlebells, resistance bands, and a yoga mat. Try to include a mixture of workout machines used for resistance training, strength training, and cardio. Always put things away when you’re done using them, so the space is ready to use next time. Keep in mind the temperatures outside in case you need a fan or portable air conditioner. Set up a good stereo system so you can listen to music as you work out.

With some planning and preparation, you can transform your garage into the perfect workbench, playroom, home gym, or anything else you desire.

5 Gifts for the Cowboy in Your Life

If you live somewhere with dairy or beef farms, chances are you know a cowboy. Whether they compete at your local rodeo or show livestock at the county fair, they embrace the label as part of their heritage or culture. Curious about what to get them for a birthday or holiday? Here are some ideas.

Belts and Buckles

In some circles, belt buckles are a way to convey identity. A novelty buckle is sure to get a smile. Some competitions also use buckles in place of trophies, allowing winners to proudly display their victories. Finding a belt that compliments their prized buckles, such as a cattle roundup belt for a trophy buckle from a rodeo, is a subtle gift that will make big waves.

Saddle Bags

If they spend a lot of time on horseback for work or recreation, saddlebags are a good idea. They can keep water bottles handy and be a safe place to store phones and other equipment.

Hat Holder

Stetson hats don't just look fancy, they keep the sun out of your eyes, ensuring you're not blinded by the glare. However, they are cumbersome, and storage can be a hassle. Having a designated holder in the truck or bedroom can prevent the hat from being irreparably squished by accident.

New Work Boots

Classic cowboy boots might just raise an eyebrow and get thrown in their closet. It's better to err on the side of practical. Even if work boots aren't fancy, the ones that keep your feet dry and safe tend to cost a pretty penny, and new ones might be a much-appreciated gift.

Boot Scraper

If you live with your cowboy, this might be as much for you as it is for him. If he doesn't have the time or energy to take off his boots before he comes into the house from the barn, boot scrapers can still keep mud and muck outside where it belongs.

Practical or cheeky, the thought put into the gift is what will make it a success.
